Pox: in the most common sense, a shortened name for the small pox disease. Also used to describe the effects of syphilis, or the "French Pox," and the marks it left on its victims. The curse "a pox upon thee" can be used with both meanings.

Black marks plague the faces of Hogarth's rakes and ladies. The large, visible indicators of syphilis serve as physical manifestations of their owners' internal (mental, spiritual) diseases.
